Takeo Tohno was a player of Sword Art Online and a large influence in the events of Sword Art Online: Blade Master.
Appearance[]
Takeo had short white hair and purple eyes. He wore an outfit consisting of black pants and sleeveless shirt with a white three-tailed jacket over it, which bore two small belts over the sleeves on the forearms as well as on the cuffs. He also wore black shoes and twin belts around his waist.
Background[]
Takeo was a beta tester of Sword Art Online. During the beta tests of the game, Takeo came across broken data floating freely in the game world, and, upon closer inspection and study, realized that he could contain the data within his own player data to gain unique abilities. Takeo, seeing an opportunity to gain an advantage in the main game, decided not to report the glitch and instead allowed it to be programmed into the main game, thereby becoming Skeith.
Sword Art Online Incident[]
Takeo joined the game and worked closely with his childhood friends, Yamato Ovan and Sakura Katsuragi, as well as their kenjutsu master Kirei Kyosho. When they all became trapped in the game, Takeo immediately went about looking for Skeith so he could use it to protect his friends. Upon acquiring Skeith, Takeo initially showed no signs of serious repercussions, aside from the normal immediate symptom of being able to experience pain and being significantly easier to kill. However, in exchange for this, Takeo gained a massive ability to manipulate the game to his liking, and vowed to use it to protect those he cared for.
Over time, however, as Skeith's influence began to corrupt him, Takeo began to exhibit signs of an altered personality and a resentment towards Yamato in particular. He became more standoffish and reserved, and began to take a much greater interest in the power Skeith could grant him. These symptoms would get worse over time, and while Yamato and Sakura attempted to reach out to him many times, it became quickly clear to everyone that Skeith was responsible for Takeo's sudden change.
While Yamato would seek out Corbenik in order to heal his friend's corruption, Takeo would be drawn further and further into Skeith's power, and eventually lost himself completely, becoming a Skeith Avatar. When Takeo was struck down by his former friend, he was momentarily brought back from his madness in the last moments of his life, just long enough to apologize before passing away.
Legacy[]
Takeo's influence on the game went almost entirely unnoticed, but did have long-lasting consequences for a few. In particular, Yamato would hold onto Corbenik, while hunting for Skeith itself to eradicate it from the game. Skeith would eventually be found and contained by another player, Ishi Haseo, who would go on to possess Skeith and Corbenik, possibly being the only player in the game compatible with both. Yamato, for his part, would seek to save Ishi from Skeith's influence without resorting to killing him, seeing in Ishi a hope in his dual compatibility, and worked tirelessly to try to push him towards a good path so he could entrust the future to him. Takeo would be Yamato's one and only player kill in the game.
Personality[]
Takeo was friendly to others and outspoken, in contrast to his friend Yamato's quiet and reserved demeanor. He was forward and direct, and always strove to become stronger to prove himself to others. While he could be brash and impulsive in his attempts to vindicate his confidence in his abilities, he was nonetheless sharper than most, and was extremely imaginative and creative, leading to an inventiveness that could find the solution to a problem where rigid linear thinking could fail. Always willing to try new ideas, Takeo strove to be better in every aspect of what he did.
This, however, belied a deep envy and jealousy, specifically towards Yamato, whom he viewed as superior to himself. Yamato, a master swordsman at such a young age, and seeming to have answers to everything with wisdom beyond his years, always seemed to be ahead of Takeo, leading to a sense of inferiority and living in his friend's shadow. Additionally, Takeo grew increasingly jealous of Sakura Katsuragi's feelings for Yamato, as well as a perceived favoritism from Kirei Kyosho, despite how hard he worked to get stronger. Though this never manifested openly before Sword Art Online, the influence of Skeith on Takeo brought this to the forefront, and as Skeith corrupted him more and more, Takeo would become ever more spiteful towards Yamato, and would eventually settle on using Skeith's power to become stronger than Yamato could ever be.
Abilities[]
Takeo was adept at Kyosho Style Traditional Martial Arts, becoming an extremely competent swordsman by the time of the Sword Art Online incident. His style was fast, aggressive, and focused on movement and acrobatics to overwhelm an opponent. As such, Takeo was very physically fit and possessed quick reflexes. While his style focused less on iaido's quick-draw techniques, it instead borrowed from kendo with a two-handed grip on his sword, allowing him a greater degree of power over his peers in the art. However, his quick-draws were still formidable, and while lacking in precision and speed, this was made up for in sheer strength, with Takeo using both hands to draw his katana from the sheath and cleave hard into an enemy.
