Sword Art Online Alternative: Spell Blade Online (ソードアートオンライン リオルタナティブ・スペルブレードオンライン, Sōdo Āto Onrain Orutanatibu: Superu Burēdo Onrain?) is an English light novel series written by Amezuki Yotsuba and illustrated by Walker Bookman. Aincrad (First Arc, SAO)[]

In the year 2022, Ayanami Shiratsuyu (the main protagonist), a professional child idol, grew an interest in the game of Sword Art Online, having participated in the game's Closed Beta and using her connections to score herself a copy of the game and logging in for the beginning of the official service. However, the game was a death sentence. No one was allowed to leave. The only way to leave was to win: clear all 100 floors of Aincrad.
Spell Blade Online Closed Beta (Second Arc, SBO)[]

It was only in mid-July, 2025 was Sword Art Online finally cleared. The remaining 5,938 players were logged out from the game and the incident hit the global news yet again. With the incident fresh in the minds of Japanese citizens, the industry of VRMMORPGs was halted with «[[w:c:swordartonline:ALfheim Online|]]» and other respective VRMMOs that were released during the SAO incident being all shut down by the government. However, this halting of the industry did not last long. Under the direction of the Rath company, the new game of «Spell Blade Online» was created using the old data from ALfheim Online. The Closed Beta was released to 3,000 players in November 2025 as a homage to the memory of the day Sword Art Online began.
Spell Blade Online (Third Arc, SBO)[]

With the successful completion of the Closed Beta with no issues, the project was given the 'okay' to continue with an official release. Preceding this, however, Yūna Shigemura's father, Tetsuhiro Shigemura, laid out the newly invented [[w:c:swordartonline:Augma|]] which utilizes «Augmented Reality» as its main interface. While waiting for the official release of Spell Blade Online, the ARMMORPG, «Ordinal Scale», holds its Closed Beta.
