Royal Guard, also known as the [REDACTED], is an elite group of five Dracos, supposedly the greatest and most skilled Draco Knights who serve as the royal bodyguards of the Dragon King. Their duty is to protect their King and the royal family from any harm, to obey his commands, and to keep his secrets.

Customs[]

Duties[]

The Royal Guard is composed of five Dragon-riding Dracos or/and Half-Dracos Knights. In theory, members are meant to be the living exemplars of the pinnacle of knightly virtues, though in practice this rarely happens. A Royal Guard swears the holiest of vows to serve the Dragon King. They serve for life, regardless of age or physical limitations or mental ailments. A Royal Guard can only be dismissed from service by the King himself, though this is very rare to happen. All the members are forbidden to marry, hold lands, or father children. They may, however, retain or be granted non-hereditary titles.

The first and main duty of any Royal Guard is to keep the King from harm. They are sworn to obey the King's commands, to keep his secrets, to counsel him when requested and to keep silent when not, and to defend his name and honor. The Kings can decide to extend the protection to others. They are also sworn not to harm any member of the royal family.

The Lord Captain is the leader of the Royal Guard. He is chosen by the Dragon King himself. If he were to die, a new one is chosen from the existing pool, with seniority and ability playing big parts in the decision.

In order to protect the King and the royal family night and day, the five men must rely to some degree on others, mostly members of the household of the King.

Members who join are supposed to be Dragon Riders. This is not a prerequisite as there is no law that determines this, but rather, it's custom that grew over the years. Since the members of the guard participate is dangerous activities, it's likely for the Dragon to die at some of this missions. That being said, members are not dismissed from service because of this, and some even take a new mount.

Equipment[]

Historically, the Royal Guard has worn an armor that matches the colors of House Aldrake, black, crimson and gold. They wore long red cloaks, black suits of armor, their fastenings for breastplate and other pieces made of metal painted in gold, over a closed crimson coat trimmed with black and gold.

Under Heleanne, the armor changed. Now they were the colors of House Albion, white, blue, and silver. However, they still were the iconic red cloaks.

Noble members of the guard are authorized to equip their armor with the sigil of their house. Also, armors can be customized to a certain extent if they serve a purpose for the wearer's fighting style.

Appointment[]

Background and History[]

The Guard was founded during the reign of the first Dragon King, Bowein I Aldrake, better known as Bowein the Great. After an assassination attempt on him, he chose five of his friends, who he had instructed himself on dragon riding, and appointed them as guards and confidants, and thus the Royal Guard was created.
