~ Rai Narukami |
Rai Narukami, known in-game as Albus Nocturnus is a highschool student and a player of Endless Utopia Online. He is the main character of Endless Utopia Online: By Moonlight.
Appearance[]
In-Game[]
In EUO, Rai's outfit is a personalized version of the standard Imperial Guard uniform. This consists of a long black two-tailed overcoat with a high collar, lined in red and purple and with gold buckles on the cuffs and brackets on the shoulders. He wears a gray shirt underneath it, with black pants and dark brown boots, along with black fingerless gloves. He also wears segmented light black plate armor over his boots and over his left shoulder, choosing to discard the rest of the standard Imperial Guard armor to retain speed and mobility. Over it he occasionally dons the signature black cloak of the Imperial Guard that resembles a bat's wings.
His second outfit which he wears after his defeat by Toshiro Kurosawa and subsequently going rogue sees him donning a new dark bluish gray four-tailed hooded coat with black and blue trim, with sleek black pants and black boots. The coat bears multiple black straps on the arms and waist, and the entire piece is accentuated by silver buckles and studs, with several accents in the shape of the moon. He also wears a black cape with blue inlay over his left shoulder. The outfit, designed and made by Huizhong Meifeng, upholds a sense of nobility retained from his previous outfit as an Imperial Guard, but more personalized to himself. Over all of this he usually wears a black cloak to make himself less conspicuous in his travels.
After becoming the Knight of House Crysell, he has his outfit modified to one that is nearly identical to his previous one, with the main difference being white fur on the collar, as well as accents and details of white instead of blue, and a white cape on his left shoulder adorned with the crest of House Crysell. He will also sometimes wear a heavy cloak over this outfit while out in the frigid territory surrounding Snowpeak Manor.
Real Life[]
In real life, Rai commonly wears the standard uniform of Tsukiyo Academy, being a black uniform with a blazer, slacks, dress shoes, and a white button-up undershirt and a loose dark blue ribbon tie around his neck.
On days off, he's usually seen wearing blue jeans, black shoes, a t-shirt, and a white and black jacket.
After the events of EUO and becoming a detective for the Tokyo Metropolitan Police, Rai wears black work shoes, black cargo pants, a white dress shirt he keeps untucked, a black tie and a navy blue blazer.
Background[]
Rai Narukami was always an intellectual. His almost genius intelligence and studious behavior was noticed by his peers and teachers alike. As a result, he was generally liked by his teachers, but was bullied relentlessly by his schoolmates, resulting in a more closed off and distanced personality. His only solace was in his little sister, Tsuki, who he found purpose in protecting, and even with a bit of distance in his personality, he was always cheerful and optimistic with his sister. However, Tsuki never returned home one day, and Rai soon discovered afterwards that she had been raped and murdered while on her way home. The death of his sister resulted in the collapse of his family, with his mother leaving them and his father breaking down. Rai himself took the death of his sister extremely hard, and distanced himself even further from his peers, going so far as to never speak again. His loss of purpose in life drove him to contemplate suicide, making an attempt only once, but refusing to go through with it, after which he spoke again for the first time in four years after the death of his sister. His quiet and distanced personality would be carried on for years after the incident. Due to his years of isolating himself from others, he does not understand how to interact socially with others, and thus rarely speaks at all.
Rai is now a high school student attending Tsukiyo Academy, a prestigious school just off the coast of the Koto Ward in Tokyo. He earned his place there from his previous high school due to his remarkable grades, transferring there in his third year.
EUO[]
Rai has been contracted by the police through a special detective and associate of his to hunt down certain crime syndicates using EUO as a means of communication. To this end, the police had a Game Master give him a special program capable of tracing the IP addresses of players in order to covertly track down where these syndicates are operating from. Rai agreed to this as his associate also informed him that the man that killed his sister is among one of these syndicates, being a higher ranking member of the Yakuza, making him inaccessible to police by normal means, and though the man does not play EUO, he could be tracked down from his subordinates who do. His motives coincide with those of the police, and as such, he now acts as an agent of sorts within the game for them so he can hunt down Tsuki's killer, intent on killing him.
Rai had remained hidden during his time in EUO until the time of the Dark Emperor Zaetharion II Blackwyng's purge of House [REDACTED]. He offered valuable information and skills in order to assist the Dark Emperor's execution of the Noble House. In exchange for this, Rai was granted a position in the Imperial Guard at his request. The exchange, however, had ulterior motives from both sides. The Dark Emperor was aware that Rai had his own reasons for assisting him and for pledging his allegiance as an Imperial Guard. Rai, for his part, knew that the Dark Emperor would use him for his superior intellect and intelligence gathering skills while keeping him under close watch. Both were also aware that the other knew of their motives, and so a mutual and unspoken understanding was forged between the two.
While Rai utilized the resources of the Dark Emperor in order to expand his own intelligence network to continue hunting down the man responsible for his sister's death, he served under the Dark Emperor, quickly becoming one of his most valuable assets due to his superior intellect and ability to gather information. He spent most of his time analyzing his other Imperial Guards, especially Toshiro Kurosawa, the Lord Captain under the Dark Emperor, and even the Dark Emperor himself, in preparation for when he would eventually leave his service unceremoniously. He was aware that the Lord Captain was keeping close watch of him at all times, which signaled to Rai that the Dark Emperor himself was also preparing for the inevitable.
Rai, at this point, would find a Yakuza network within the game, but instead of reporting it to the police, he would work to discover the identities of these members from within the game himself in an attempt to root out his sister's killer. He is eventually found out by one member of the group, but he is assured by the man that he could help, explaining that he knew of the situation with Rai's sister, but didn't know exactly who did it, further explaining that this certain individual would be trouble for the Yakuza as a whole if the police became more involved. The Yakuza member, who introduced himself as [REDACTED], told Rai that he would help him from within the Yakuza itself to root out the troublemaker, while Rai would continue to uncover information in the game.
The two, working together, would eventually discover the identity of Tsuki's killer, and [REDACTED] explained that he could set up a hit on him to allow Rai himself to kill his sister's killer. Rai accepted the offer and made his way to an isolated alley where [REDACTED] offered Rai a gun to perform the execution. When Rai revealed himself to the man and pointed the gun at him, he realized that he had been set up and attempted to plead for his life, but Rai interrupted him by shooting him directly in the head, killing him instantly without a single word and with no hesitation.
After this was done, Rai then turned the gun on himself, holding it up to his head in preparation to end his own life. It was at this point that Rin, who had followed Rai when he left the dorm, pleaded with him to stop. When Rai hesitated and began to lower the gun, [REDACTED] stepped in and attempted to shoot Rai himself, but Rin jumped in front of Rai to take the bullet for him. With police well on their way from hearing the gunshots, [REDACTED] made a quick escape, leaving Rai alone with the dead man and Rin, who was seriously hurt.
While Rin was taken to the hospital, Rai was taken into police custody, where he was questioned about his actions. Rai admitted to killing the man but that another was responsible for shooting Rin. With the situation becoming nearly untenable, it was suggested Rai be thrown in prison for the time being, but several strings were pulled to allow him to continue operating as an informant within EUO, noting how far Rai had actually penetrated the Yakuza's network, coupled with his skills in doing so. For the time being, however, he was not allowed to go back to his dorm.
Rai once again entered the game and immediately suffered a massive mental collapse. His weakened state made him especially suspicious to the Dark Emperor and Lord Captain Toshiro, who immediately took notice of Rai's shattered mental state. With this warning ahead of time, it was easy for both to deduce that Rai was going to defect immediately, even if it wasn't in the ways they had predicted. Rai, in his distraught mental state, then ran away, effectively abandoning his service to the Dark Emperor. Toshiro quickly caught up to Rai and challenged him, taking notice of Rai's fractured mental stability and erratic behavior. Despite this, Rai is able to put up a stiff resistance, even surprising Toshiro with the true power of his Weapon Release which he had never seen before. Despite this, Rai was eventually decisively defeated by Toshiro, who prepared to take him back to the Dark Emperor for judgement. Before he could, however, Kiryu intervened in their fight and fended off Toshiro, forcing him to retreat before he ran too low on Aera from his previous battle with Rai. Kiryu then brought an unconscious Rai to his own group, the Retainers of the Throne.
It was shortly after this that Rai was contacted once more by the same Yakuza network he had been tracking beforehand. They explained to him that they wanted to employ his services in order to find the man who had shot Rin, elaborating that he had been expelled from the clan for shooting a civilian. It was explained that the reason the police were after them was because of a power struggle that had occurred in the Yakuza itself, involving the man who shot Rin as well as the one who had killed Rai's sister. If the Yakuza could personally deal with the root cause of the issue, it would both settle the dispute within the organization and satisfy the police force, and as an added incentive Rai was promised that strings could be pulled to get him off the hook for his own killing if he cooperated. Without many options, and wanting to find the man who shot Rin regardless, Rai accepted the offer. To this end, Rai was offered a direct liaison to the Yakuza, in the form of a junior member named Kazuya Yagami, who would assist Rai on his end while Rai himself continued to operate with the police.
After a certain time with the Retainers of the Throne as well as evading the Imperial Guard and Royal Guard, Rai made a last ditch plan to once and for all rid himself of the enemies chasing after him. He asked Rin to make him her Knight for her Noble House, explaining that such a position within the Nymph princedom would grant him diplomatic immunity, thereby making him untouchable to the Fiends and Dracos chasing him. Rin agreed and immediately called for a council with the other Nymph Noble Houses as well as the Grand Prince. Rai was brought in to speak on his behalf, and along with the trusted word of Rin was granted temporary amnesty in return for the secrets he held from his time as a member of the Imperial Guard, whereupon a decision would be made whether or not he would be granted his request. After disclosing everything he knew to the Grand Prince in a private setting, the decision was made to allow Rai to become a Knight to House Crysell, thereby granting him diplomatic immunity and the blessing of the Grand Prince.
Shortly after this, Rai was formally challenged to a duel by Toshiro, knowing Rai had been made a Knight. Rai accepted the challenge, noting that it was a matter of pride that Toshiro was challenging him again after he had escaped the first time. During their second battle, Rai displayed much more power and skill than before, and made full use of his new crafted techniques in order to counter Toshiro's own abilities. After a long and hard-fought battle, Rai emerged victorious over Toshiro, but chose to spare his life. When Toshiro claimed this made him weak, Rai responded that he was weak no longer, before leaving and returning to Rin.
After this battle, Rai convenes all of his allies together to make a statement. He takes a moment to speak freely to all of them, explaining his views of the world and himself after his sister's death, explaining that he had thought that the only way to achieve strength and power was to isolate oneself from others and their emotions in a selfish pursuit of power so as never to feel helpless again. He explained how he came to realize that true strength lied in the bonds one shares with others, and Rai credits his victory over Toshiro to all of his allies who had stayed with him this entire time. He awkwardly thanks all of them profusely, but is reprimanded by Kiryu for forgetting what he had told him: that no thanks were necessary as that's what friends were for. At this statement, Rai breaks down into grateful tears, and at this expression of emotion, his friends all gather around him to give him their unwavering support.
Later on the same day, Rai requests a moment alone with Rin. He reiterates what he had said earlier that he wasn't the best at expressing himself, and asked for Rin's forgiveness at his awkwardness. He then blurts out a confession of his love for her, feelings which she wholeheartedly accepts, and the two share a kiss.
For the rest of his time in EUO, Rai faithfully served as Rin's personal Knight, and performed various valuable services for the Nymph princedom as a whole, using his unique skillset in a similar fashion as his time as an Imperial Guard. This would eventually erode any doubts of his intentions, and Rai eventually became a very valuable asset for the Grand Prince himself.
Rai was able to investigate further into the Yakuza network and, utilizing his connections through Kazuya as well as the resources provided to him by the police, he was able to track down [REDACTED]. Instead of going to the police with this information, however, he and Kazuya set up a trap, allowing him to confront him personally. Once cornered, Rai ordered Kazuya to hand him his gun, and pointed it towards [REDACTED] However, after a few moments, Rai handed Kazuya's gun back, explaining that he never intended to shoot, having learned his lesson from before. Instead he made contact with the police and had [REDACTED] arrested. For ending the power struggle within the Yakuza and satisfying the police force, Rai was given a clean slate through careful politicking on the police's part and string-pulling from the Yakuza, and Rai's contract with the police was officially closed.
Post-EUO[]
After his time in EUO, Rai marries Rin Nagase and, using his close ties with the Tokyo Metropolitan Police through his work with them, landed an official job as a detective and officer for the TMP. Rai quickly proved to be the best detective in the force, even managing to solve several cases that had gone completely cold, as well as working with police of different jurisdictions all over Japan. Rai easily made a name for himself as a genius detective by his precise skills of deduction and critical thinking during his time in the TMP. He also became an expert in the criminal underworld of Japan, with his close ties to the Yakuza becoming useful in several of his cases. Despite his occupation as a man of the law, he would sometimes collaborate with the Yakuza himself, having made inroads within the leading families in order to solve certain cases or exchange certain favors. He continued to work closely with his friend Kazuya who would assist him with his investigations from time to time. His unorthodox and questionable methods were sometimes frowned upon by his peers, but none could challenge the results Rai always produced.
Personality[]
Rai can best be described as cold and a loner, tending to stick to himself and himself alone, and is ambivalent to the point of apathy. He has next to no social life, but is not bothered by his lack of friends, going so far even as to say that friends would only get in his way. He views otherwise virtuous traits, such as compassion, empathy, and love as completely useless to him, and that such petty things have no place in today's society. This is in fact the main reason why he was chosen as one of Dark Emperor's personal guards in EUO. According to the Dark Emperor himself, his emotionless and uncaring personality makes him "the perfect killer", though the other edge of the sword is absolutely no real sense of loyalty. To him, death is a trivial matter at most.
Rai is naturally calm and collected in all situations, and nothing causes him any distress in the slightest. The most emotion he usually exhibits is annoyance towards others. He is, however, quite formal in his body language, with a straight posture and confident stride. He is usually seen with one or both hands in his pockets, depending on his mood.
Rai Narukami can also be seen as contemplative and thoughtful, often reflecting on his life and remembering happier times of when his sister was alive and when he was happy with his family together. He will often spend nights during the full moon outside, wandering aimlessly around the more rural areas of the island, far away from the city lights, for hours on end. This is due to his sister's love for the moon and playing outside in the moonlight, a trait which also imprinted on him. He finds these walks calming and serene, and the only times he can really find solace in his life anymore.
After Rin Nagase is hospitalized after saving his life, Rai is left shaken and distraught in a clear departure from his apathetic nature. He suffers a full mental breakdown from the event and loses much of his sense of logic and reason as years of internal crisis he had kept to himself is released out into the open. The breakdown Rai suffers made him realize that he'd never gotten over the death of his sister, and as a result he regresses dramatically and attempts to distance himself from everything and everyone.
During his time as an Outlaw, Narukami is taken in by the Retainers of the Throne, led by his dorm mate Kiryu Sanada. He becomes entirely withdrawn, suffering in great distress. It is during this time that he meets Rin again, and he immediately suffers a panic attack, leading to him running away from the group. Over time, he calms down somewhat, but is still incredibly unstable and his emotions are fragile. He eventually is able to once again speak to Rin, and for her part, she begins to tell him stories about her childhood among other things. Eventually, she begins to read to him from a selection of short stories she had written throughout her life, something that she said she was embarrassed about due to her earlier works being unrefined and sloppy, but Rai would admit that he didn't mind and wanted to hear more.
Rai eventually learns that Rin used to have a crochet doll of herself that had been handmade for her by her grandmother, but that she was bullied at school for carrying it around and eventually threw it away. When Rin expressed regret for having thrown it away and never seeing it again, Rai immediately goes to Huizhong Meifeng and asks her to teach him how to crochet dolls, further explaining that he couldn't just have her make a custom one, and that he had to make it himself, being extremely adamant about doing so but not explaining the exact reason why.
In establishing a relationship with Rin, as well as Kiryu, Rai eventually recovers from his depression and trauma and begins to grow more as a person. He becomes extremely dedicated to protecting both Rin and Kiryu, and vows to himself to become stronger for their sake, not just in ability, but in character as well.
After Rai's final battle with Toshiro, he explains that he used to be weak, even when he thought otherwise. He acknowledged the fact that he attempted to remain apathetic and ambivalent in a flawed idea that strength came from being emotionless so as not to ever feel helpless again. After Rin's hospitalization, he had realized that he was just as weak as when his sister had died, and even more so. He comes to realize that he can't ever be as strong as he needs to be on his own, and that the only reason he became powerful enough to defeat Toshiro was due to all the people who had supported him. In this declares that he finally has the power he needs to protect everyone he cares for and profusely thanks his friends for giving him the strength he needed.
After the events of EUO, Rai became much more kind, caring, and relaxed. His strong sense of justice which led him to become a detective for the Tokyo Metropolitan Police. He is still extremely calm and composed, and will still face danger with absolutely no concern. He constantly makes sure he has the advantage in whatever situation he finds himself in, which leads to his sense of earned confidence. These qualities of his have brought Rai more than once into the middle of dangerous situations involving the Yakuza, but by this time he had become well known within each family as a man who got things done and, while he wasn't necessarily an ally, didn't wish to become a full-blown enemy, either. Rai would also offer his services to the Yakuza for certain favors towards his own ends, so long as they didn't directly run afoul of the law. Rai's methods of straddling the line between the law and crime worlds of Japan made him an extremely valuable asset to both the police and the Yakuza.
Abilities[]
Endless Utopia Online[]
- Race: Regular Hybrid (Terran/Fiend)
- Aera-type: Alterer
- Occupation: Member of the Imperial Guard (Formerly), Outlaw (Formerly), Knight to House Crysell
- Main Equipment:
In Endless Utopia Online, Rai is a rare Hybrid, and is a crossbreed of a Terran and a Fiend. He is an expert at controling his Aera, and uniquely specializes in concentrating Aera around specific areas instead of in a more widespread fashion, in a technique named Moonlight Edge. To this end, he concentrates power along the edges of his weapons, enhancing their cutting power and even increasing their range, additionally being able to cut into targets more distant with the Aera pressure on the blades.
Rai is deadly with his twin scythes, Mangetsu. He utilizes the weapons with style and lethal precision, able to accurately throw the weapons out on their chains to strike distant targets, and can even spin the blades at extremely high speeds, which can be further enhanced by adding his Alteration to them, capable of creating an invisible field around the edges that can strike targets beyond the blades. The nature of his weapons makes his combat style incredibly unpredictable, as he is able to change the direction of his blades with a simple flick of his wrist or tug on the chain, easily being able to throw his blade out and curve it into a perfect arc that slices through the enemy from behind. He can also use his blades as grappling hooks, being able to dig into most surfaces and allowing him to swing, pull himself up, or scale vertical climbs, additionally being able to pull in distant targets to himself to shred an enemy apart at close range.
Rai is also capable of Weapon Release, turning his twin scythes into a chokuto of immense power and unparalleled sharpness, named Tsukuyomi.
With Tsukuyomi, Rai's abilities increase exponentially in both speed and power. With the majority of his Area comprising the blade itself, Tsukuyomi becomes an incredibly powerful and dangerous weapon that can cut clean through nearly anything it touches, including other weapons and even other Released Weapons, only being countered by particularly powerful Aera users withstanding the intense pressure the blade exerts. Rai's fighting style when using Tsukuyomi is extremely fast and uncharacteristically aggressive, focusing on maintaining a constant pressure on the enemy in order to end the battle as soon as possible. In most circumstances, this happens in mere moments, but against particularly powerful enemies it is all the more important for him to make battles as short as possible so as not to overextend himself. The extreme power of Tsukuyomi paired with the fact that he is unable to use most other Aera Arts while it is active means that Rai's endurance is shortened considerably, with the ability burning an excessive amount of Aera for every moment it is active. Over time, Rai learns to become more proficient in the use of Tsukuyomi, allowing him to keep it active for extended periods of time, as well as affording him the ability to be more thoughtful in his attacks. He also picks up a penchant for using the chain attached to Tsukuyomi and wrapped around his arm to wield the weapon like he would with Mangetsu, swinging the blade out a short distance on the chain and spinning it about for increased striking speed and power.
However, Tsukuyomi's true power lies in its ability to switch between two forms, called New Moon and Full Moon. In its New Moon state, the blade is pure black and is in a powered down state. While in Full Moon, Rai's full power is unleashed in the blade, causing it to shine a bright white. While in this form, the blade is almost always lethal to anything it touches, being able to destroy even the extremely powerful weapons or enemies that may have been able to withstand it before. However, this form burns Rai's Aera at an excessive rate, meaning it can only be used for short bursts at most, and runs a risk of draining Rai completely and reverting the weapon back to its unreleased state. Over time, Rai learns to switch between both forms nearly instantly, allowing him to throw off an opponent or deal a devastating blow when least expected.
Rai also uses his intellect to his advantage in combat, calculating his and his opponent's actions in his head even during heated engagements, remaining calm and collected throughout. He has been shown to be willing to throw both caution and morality to the wind in order to break and defeat an opponent, willing to threaten innocents if he knew that it would damage his enemy, and even willing to employ suicide tactics that hurt him just as much as his opponent. These qualities especially is what the Dark Emperor prizes Narukami for, even aside from his actual combat abilities.
Rai is also an expert at information gathering, employing these abilities mainly to hunt down men connected to the Yakuza syndicate he is employed by the police to track, but also using it in regards to his duties as a member of the Imperial Guard, being mainly assigned on information and reconnaissance missions by the Dark Emperor. In this field, he is second to none, and his skills in information as well as his skills in deduction and observation made him an extremely valuable asset and the Dark Emperor's primary source of information on both his allies and his enemies.
Due to his skills at information gathering, Rai is also highly skilled in hunting and tracking targets. Despite his relatively normal human senses, enhanced only with the ability of Aera Dome, his incredible intellect and critical thinking and observational skills allow him to track targets on par with the likes of fellow Imperial Guard Selene Hardy, who has naturally enhanced senses with her Tamed Beast.
After his devastating defeat by the Lord Captain of the Imperial Guard, Rai identified three main weaknesses he had during his battle; the lack of a proper defense, the inability to quickly bring opponents into his range, and the inability to deal a decisive blow therein. To this end, he developed three unique abilities to address each. The first, is a sphere of force immediately around Rai that has enough power to repel nearly any kind of attack, named Yata no Kagami. The second is the ability to apply an attractive force towards a single target at range to pull them towards him, named Yasakani no Magatama. The third and final skill was the most difficult for Rai to develop, despite being a variation of his primary skill, Moonlight Edge. Using Tsukuyomi, Rai is able to apply Moonlight Edge into a powerful blade that extends the reach of his weapon while dramatically increasing its power. The massive power of the attack means certain death for all but the most powerful of opponents, but at the expense of using all the power remaining within the Weapon Release, thereby reverting it back to its normal state. This skill was named Kusanagi no Tsurugi.
As evident by his abilities in Technique Crafting, Rai excels at learning new abilities and skills as well as developing his own. Despite the differing attributes of his developed skills to his natural affinities, he showed the ability to learn how to expand his skill set in order to overcome any obstacle.
Real Life[]
After EUO and joining the Tokyo Metropolitan Police, Rai was trained extensively in Taiho Jutsu, the standard martial art of Japanese law enforcement, and also practiced in Aikido and Jui-Jitsu, even training with the Yakuza. His fighting style focuses on agility and utilizing his enemy's attacks against them, specializing in parries, redirections, grapples and submissions. As Rai himself is fairly lightweight and has lower stamina, his fighting style is extremely conservative, utilizing momentum and even environmental objects in order to gain advantages. His fighting style makes him an expert at quickly subduing suspects for arrest, as well as disarming armed opponents and disabling by dislocation or breaking of limbs where necessary. Rai also received firearms training from both the police force and the Yakuza. He carries with him a personal Smith and Wesson Model 60 .357 Magnum revolver on the job, though he rarely needs to use it.
In terms of his work, Rai has proven that he is the sharpest and most intelligent detective working not just in Tokyo, but in the entire country, and even noted as being one of the most capable detectives worldwide. His extreme intellect and deductive skills have allowed him to solve many extremely difficult cases for the Tokyo Metropolitan Police, even solving several cases that had gone completely cold. It is due to this that he often lends himself to the most difficult to crack cases that Japan encounters, as well as sometimes being assigned to different cases around the world. His skills in the detective field have earned him a reputation as being one of the best of the best, with his analytical and deductive skills being second to none.
