Hephaestus's skills in weapon smithing are renown across Aincrad as the best in all the land. He is known for making incredibly powerful weapons, as well as having the ability to enhance other weapons far beyond their normal limits. It is this reason why he is sought after by many players.
Hephaestus is one of only two known blacksmiths in SAO able to craft weapons from Hellkarium, forging Medorach, Lamentation and Nocturne from pure Hellkarium, the three blades being three of his finest works.
The most powerful weapon he ever created is named Aphelion, and he gives the sword to Ishi in recognition of being a true Blade Master.
