Edith (イーディス, Ēdisu?), otherwise known as Edith Synthesis Ten (イーディス・シンセシス・テン, Ēdisu Synthesis Ten?), is an important recurring character in the Alicization Arc. She is a high-ranking «Integrity Knight» and is among the strongest knights of the Order, being considered the third-strongest after Bercouli and Fanatio, the Commander and Vice-Commander, respectively. During the Great War, she guarded one of the other entrances to the «Dark Territory» and upon the end of the war, became the official Ambassador of the «Human Empires» via the «Human Empire Unification Council» to the «Dark Territory», as well as one of the wives of the Swordsman Delegate, Kirito.

Background[]

Edith was born to fairly rich commoners in a village near a rather affluent town in the year 180. At the age of eight , she was blessed with a younger sister, Mary, however, her mother unfortunately passed away to birthing complications. Edith cared for her sister in her deceased mother's place and also self-studied the «Sacred Arts». At the age of ten, Edith was granted her «Sacred Task» of «swordsman», a historic moment as she was the first person to receive such a «Sacred Task». In accordance with the «Sacred Task», Edith picked up a sword and began honing her skills; she left her sister in the care of her father and other villagers. She was also enrolled into the local town's learning institution to educate herself and face peers with similar tasks and this is where Edith learned the Narukami-style, becoming one of the foremost disciples of the style. At the age of twelve, she was sent to study in Centoria, promising to her father and her sister that she would return, and four years later, at the age of fifteen (as the school year begins in the Fourth Month versus her sixteenth birthday in the Ninth Month), she took the entrance exam for the Sword Mastery Academy, coming out on top of all the entrants.

As the top student trainee, Edith was given the privilege to be the Valet of an Elite Swordsman-in-Training and the mentor who chose her was a first-ranked noble by the name of Ernest Fairclough. His reasoning for breaking tradition by not picking a fellow noble and instead choosing a commoner like Edith was a rather simple one: he had fallen in love with Edith's beautiful form as well as the elegance of Edith herself. Edith consistently ranked among the top students in her year and upon her mentor's graduation, she gifted him a bundle of camellia flowers. Upon the advancement exam to decide the top-ranking Elite Swordsman-in-Training, Edith scored at the top of that as well and advanced into her second year as the first-ranked Elite Swordsman-in-Training; Edith's choice of valet was Ernest's younger sister, Sophia, and she cared for her as if she were her own younger sister (as Sophia greatly reminded Edith of her own sister, Mary, who she has not seen for years). Upon her own graduation, Sophia gifted Edith zephilia flowers that she had grown herself which greatly pleased Edith and gave her the motivation to flawlessly finish her tenure at the Sword Mastery Academy as the top-ranked student in all fields for her specific years of attendance.

After graduation, Edith participated in the Norlangarth North Empire Swordsmanship Tournament which she won (but not without much difficulty). Seeing her visage, Ernest once again accosted Edith, only this time, he asked for her hand in marriage. Having fallen in love with him herself in the year she spent training with him in the Sword Mastery Academy, Edith accepted and her marriage to Ernest became the first documented case of a first-rank noble marrying a commoner (this caused much outrage among the nobles but Ernest silenced them all as he was the strongest noble swordsman, having won the Norlangarth North Empire Swordsmanship Tournament himself). However, Edith wasn't much for noble life so with her husband's permission, she constantly ventured out of her home, especially to pay frequent visits to her sister, Mary, who had already became nine years old in the blink of an eye.

On one such visit, Edith discovered that Mary has always had a bad foot, something that she did not know because she had already left her family to study the sword by the time Mary could even speak. Edith set out to find the legendary dragon sleeping in the «End Mountains» but could not go further due to an ever-expanding bottomless swamp...

Personality[]

Despite being an Integrity Knight, Edith has the most vibrant personality. She is extremely playful and loves befriending everyone she can. This culminates in her extremely strong friendship with Alice Synthesis Thirty...
