Dragons are a species of animal found in Endless Utopia Online.

Biology[]

Dragons are large reptiles with serpentine bodies, sharp razor teeth, strong jaws, long tails, sharp claws, and pointy horns on multiple parts of the body and they are covered in scales. Their scales may vary in color, and historically, they ranged from black to silver, gold, red, white, green, and even blue.

Dragons can be subclassified intwo three subspecies:

  • Drakes - the largest of the species, with three pairs of limbs: two forelimbs, two hindlimbs, and two wings.
  • Wyverns - the second largest of the subspecies, with two wings as forelimbs and two hindlimbs.
  • Sky-Wryms - the smallest of the three subspecies, with four legs and a long snake-like body.

A notable difference that Dragonids have with other Reptiles is that they are warm-blooded since they can stand cold temperatures albeit not freezing. They, however, have a preference for warmer climates.

All Dragons are carnivores, with diets consisting entirely of meat. They can eat any kind of meat, from cows to sheep to fish. They eat only cooked meat and use their extremely hot flame breath to cook their meat before eating it.

Dragons are the namesake of the fauna group known as Dragonids.

Behavior, Taming and Riding[]

Dragons are very intelligent animals, akin to a dog or a horse. They are capable of sensing when somebody or something can pose a threat or not. Though not able to speak, Dragons are capable of understanding basic commands.

As beasts, Dragons can never truly be tamed, but they can be bonded and trained. The only race capable of performing this feat are Dracos and half-dracos since they share many characteristics with Dragons. The one who manages to tame a Dragon is called Dragon Tamer or Dragon Rider. A Dragon needs to grow of a proper size to be ridden. Dragons are generally equipped with a special saddle with a strap, as otherwise riding a dragon considered to be rather dangerous. If they are not trained, a dragon will become bestial and savage, and they will quickly lay waste to anything around them. This is why it's easier to bond with a dragon when it's young rather than when it is fully grown. Food is essential for training since a Dragon with a full stomach is more obedient.

Dragon and Rider can form very strong bonds with their riders and will show affection and trust towards them. They will even nuzzle their riders, hoping to be petted. Dragons can be very loyal towards their rider, and can risk their lives for the sake of their partner. They will not allow anyone else to ride them, no matter how familiar that person is to the Dragon, although the may able to accept another person if their true rider is mounted as well. When the rider of a dragon dies, that dragon can bond with a new rider. No rider has ever ridden a different dragon while their current dragon was alive.

There is also some sort of spiritual bond between rider and dragon that allows them to feel each other in the distance.

Abilities[]

Most Dragons have an affinity for the element of Fire, and most Dragons showcase this affinity by using their iconic fire breath, which is probably their most famous ability along with their ability to fly. They gain this ability a short time after being born, and with time and growth, the power of the fire can grow exponentially. Adult Dragons can produce a stream of fire capable of turning flesh to ash, melting steel, and cracking stones.

It is possible to find a Dragon with affinity to another Element as well as Fire, for instance, Light, Lightning and Sun. It is also possible, though more unlikely, to find a tamed dragon with an affinity to a combined form of Fire that its tamer can use. This is also possible with created elements, as long as one of the elemental components of said combined element is Fire.

Dragons' bodies are covered in incredibly hard scales, and this makes them impervious (to an extent) to fire and metallic weapons. There is a limit to the resistance of these scales, and bolts of metal from large weapons, such as Ballista and Scorpions can pierce through these scales.

Background[]

Since the Era of Heros and Legends, Dragons were considered extremely dangerous animals. Their ability to fly, combined with their fire breath and great appetite made life for commoners dangerous, as well as putting their cattle and crops in a very vulnerable position. This also jeopardized the ability of the noble families to collect taxes. This made dragon hunting a dangerous but lucrative business engaged by Aera Arts Masters. The danger posed by Dragons also made hunting them the ultimate sport, especially for Dracos. Most notably, a guild of Dragon Hunters was organized by the then Draco Kings. Anyone who managed to slay a Dragon single-handedly became known as a Dragonslayer, and earn the respect of many their prowess as warriors would become legendary.

This lasted until the War of the Draco Sucession when a young Draco named Bowein, a young commoner who had spent most of his life far from society, became the first Dragon Rider, showing prowess greater than any of the Dragon hunters before him. His prowess eventually helped him to become the first Dragon King.

Bowein taught many Dracos all of what he knew about Dragons, and many new tamers appeared. Taming Dragons was such an important part of the Draco society that he founded the Dragon Order, which first served as Royal Guard, until they forcefully split from their sworn duty. Bowein also forbade the hunting and/or killing of Dragons. Each of the Dragonlords created a stable especially made for housing dragons.

A few centuries after the rise and proliferation of dragon riders, the Dracos attempted to conquer the other five races. The conflict known as the Great Dragon War left millions dead, but eventually, the five nations combined their effort to defeat the army of the Dracos. During and especially after the conflict, the five races engaged in a systematic slaughter of Dragons where they could find them. Though the Dracos negotiated reasonable peaceful terms with the victors, the number of dragons had been notably reduced from hundreds of thousands to less than five thousand.

After this war, the Dragons began to be monopolized by the Dracolords, with only family members and trusted men being able to become Dragon Riders. Wild Dragons also became far rarer, but killing them became a last resort situation, as the lack of Dragons made them more valuable than gold.

There is a legend about a mystical Three-headed Dragon.
