Hi, hi! Everyone, it's your favorite child singer, Aya-chan~! I hope everyone is having a jolly time~! If not, then Aya will be sad... Well, that got you excited, didn't it? I pray that you all enjoy my songs as much as I do, okay~? Let's go, everyone! Idol, Ayanami Shiratsuyu, going all-out~!
~ Ayanami's usual self-introduction during her concerts.[8]

Ayanami Shiratsuyu (白露綾波, Shiratsuyu Ayanami?), known as Shiranami (シラナミ?) in «Sword Art Online» (SAO), «ALfheim Online» (ALO), «Spell Blade Online» (SBO), and «Ordinal Scale» (OS) is the main female protagonist of Minato Yatsushiro's Sword Art Online Alternative: Spell Blade Online light novel series.

She works as a world-famous junior idol and is one of the 1,000 beta testers chosen to experience the closed beta of «Sword Art Online» and later joined the official release of the game, thus becoming one of the 10,000 players trapped within during the scandal later dubbed, SAO Incident. During her time as a player, she gained fame via her already immense fame from real life along with her excellent and almost unrivaled skills in-game. She was known as the «Snow White Songstress» (白雪の歌姫, Shirayuki no Utahime?), a reference to her beautiful snow-white hair as well as her possession of the Chant skill and the Unique Skill, Songstress. The death game was finally cleared on July 15th, 2033 with the defeat of the final boss, «An Incarnation of the Radius».

Following the end of the SAO debacle, Ayanami joined her friends in playing another explosively popular VR game that released exactly one year after SAO, «ALfheim Online». Unfortunately, she was dragged into solving a new mystery concerning missing SAO players rumored to be trapped in ALO and a rogue game master. Simultaneously, in the real world, a breakthrough in AR gaming allowed for the creation of the «Augma» and the ARMMO, «Ordinal Scale», the beta of which Ayanami participated in.

After resolving the incident of ALO, the game was shut down and revamped by a new company into «Spell Blade Online». In its re-opening, the playerbase was once more dragged into a new adventure as the premature release of the Grand Quest results with the Great Separation. Following this, Ayanami was approached by Seijirō Kikuoka and offered a part-time job to test a new «FullDive» machine, the «Soul Translator». What she was unaware of was the fact that she was helping gather data for a research venture dubbed «Project Rhealization» where she dove into its «FullDive» realm of «Underworld» as Emilia Rosenberg (エミリア・ローゼンバーグ, Emiria Rōzenbāgu?).

Background[]

Ayanami was born in the Year of the Yin Fire Rooster on October 30th, 2018. She was a child of the Shiratsuyu family, a rather famous family that produces figures high in Japanese society. For example, Ayanami's father, Kōtarō Shiratsuyu, was the highest-ranking military officer in Japan as he is the Chief of Staff, Joint Staff of the Japan Self-Defense Forces. On the other hand, Ayanami's mother, Akagi Shiratsuyu, worked as a world-famous voice actress and fashion designer although she retired from her acting career in lieu of her growing age. Due to her family being heavily militaristic, Ayanami was raised in an extremely strict household. She attends the local Koishikawa area dōjō of the Asayama Ichiden-ryũ to study the sword arts as a way to discipline herself; she is highly skilled with the sword and her ability is such that she has taken home quite a few trophies from both official and unofficial kendo tournaments in which she demonstrated her skill.[9]

Aside from this, Ayanami was trained in the fine arts for her mother wanted to raise an actress daughter. Ayanami, however, chose to become an idol instead and debuted as a junior idol at only nine years of age; it is thanks to a combination of good luck, her talents, and the relentless hard work she does for herself that she became an instant hit. She was assigned a manager to help her in her success, a man named Itsuki Taniguchi who coincidentally, is the son of the manager and foremost business partner of Ayanami's mother when she was an actress. Although Itsuki was young and inexperienced, beginning his job as Ayanami's manager at age 20, he was a powerful role model for her and Ayanami forged a respectable relationship with him. Ayanami also has a few side gigs, appearing as a child actress as well as lending her voice talents for voice acting.[9]

In the spring of 2030, she heard rumors of a game in development that highly intrigued her. Using her connections, she managed to snag herself a spot in the Closed Beta of «Sword Art Online». With the Closed Beta spanning the two months of July and August, Ayanami spent her summer break balancing her work life and her game life. While playing the Closed Beta, Ayanami, as Shiranami, met a boy named Kirito who was two years her senior and who was also the boy of her dreams. As such, having fallen in love, she tags alongside the boy as his partner for the entirety of the Closed Beta and she was able to keep up with the boy, despite him being considered to be one of the most strongest male players (as a result, Shiranami was considered to be the strongest female player).[9][10]

Upon the successful completion of the Closed Beta, Ayanami redirected all of her attention back to her idol work until it was time for the official release of SAO. Standing in line in disguise with other players hopeful, Ayanami scored herself one of the 10,000 copies of SAO. Later, after finishing a recording session for a new song with a girl two years her senior (she was her junior when it comes to idol work, however, and she wanted to become an idol, using Ayanami's coattails as a starting pad) logged on with her friend on November 3rd; she was fully expecting to log in, clock in a few hours of gameplay, and log out to prepare for her next concert, however, this would not come to pass as the Reaper declares that no one was allowed to leave his creation. Giving the players the ultimatum of clearing his game, he hands them one last parting gift in the form of a mirror. Shiranami's custom avatar, which she had carried over from the Closed Beta to once again disguise her from any possible fans that also play SAO, was erased and her identity was made known. Left with no other choice, Shiranami has to put up with living as her real self inside the death game that is SAO.[9]

Personality[]

Ayanami is kind and caring but also very strict; this is due to being raised in a militaristic household and Ayanami displays quite a few traits that the 'ideal Japanese woman' would display.[9][11] As previously stated, she is kind and caring of other people and is capable of true empathy and while confident, she never lets it get to her head.[12] Ayanami is relatively hard to anger but should someone incur her wrath, she will verbally lash out at them (albeit some people consider this cute because despite being angry, Ayanami is incapable of fluently cursing, only using a select few disparaging words).[4] In addition, Ayanami absolutely loaths excessive physical contact with the opposite sex and she will physically lash out at them for touching her for too long.[13] Ayanami carries herself with the prim and proper manners of a lady of high society and as a result, Ayanami has a way with words and is fully capable of holding extended conversations with others to which Klein often teasingly compares to Kirito because he is unable to hold an extended discourse.[14]

Her cheerfulness and outgoing personality is the primary reason why she chose to become an idol over an actress when her mother presented to Ayanami her career choices.[9] Despite having a basically uncurable addiction to video games and computers, Ayanami has a heavy appreciation for nature since she views nature as the idealized form of the world and that she, as a human, must constantly strive to become as beautiful as nature.[15] As an extension of her love for nature, Ayanami is a very skilled cook, citing that knowing how to prepare the blessings of nature is one step a person must take to achieve perfection; funnily enough, Ayanami is very competitive over who can cook better, especially with fellow cooks, Asuna and Yuna.[16]

Within the world of SAO, Shiranami is a shining beacon of hope. While she herself was a bit sad and tired at the fact that the game world which she had initially used as an escapade from her busy life as an idol, Shiranami did not take offense and willingly put herself on a pedestal to keep the high-level players from despairing.[13] Aside from this, Shiranami is the type of player who would willingly sacrifice herself to save others and she has done this multiple times, however, it usually backfires on her due to most players seeing Shiranami as a "goddess".[17] On several occasions, her presence clouds the judgment of less-well-mentally-oriented players who end up protecting Shiranami instead and dying in the process; this becomes an extremely heavy source of survivor's guilt upon the clearing of SAO and awakening in the real world.[15]

Despite being level-headed most of the time, Ayanami has experienced several emotional outbursts that are completely contrary to her normal personality; she first began exhibiting these outbursts at the age of ten after a year of working as an idol.[18] When she was brought to a renowned pediatrician to check her condition, Ayanami was diagnosed with the mental disability of dissociative identity disorder, a trait which the pediatrician thinks was inherited from Ayanami's paternal grandmother as she displayed the traits of dissociative identity disorder as well.[18] The pediatrician surmised that the disorder was dormant until Ayanami began to fully understand the stresses her job as an idol placed on her and that in order to protect her outer personality, her brain created a second personality which housed every single one of Ayanami's dark thoughts.[18]

There have been several occasions in which Shiranami's alter persona breaks out of her self-control and rampages to which Asuna was a witness to; she describes this side of Shiranami as a 'savage woman with no regards for boundaries, both physically and morally'.[19] Shiranami's alter persona is generally far more terse and harsh-lipped than her counterpart and this Shiranami also has a far more cynical outlook on life; in fact, after the deaths of Kirito and Asuna on the 75th Floor and her alter personality surfaced, Shiranami had no qualms in trying to commit suicide (multiple times as well).[20][21]

Appearance[]

Real Life / Sword Art Online Avatar[]

Even when she was extremely young as an elementary schoolgirl, Ayanami was considered a very dignified girl with a mysterious air of beauty.[3] She possesses waist-length hair the color of quicksilver and exhibits complete heterochromia as she has a purple-gold left eye and a light blue right eye.[3] However, depending on how far an onlooker is viewing her from, the color of her eyes can vary by a few hues and a smile is permanently affixed to her face.[3] Before being trapped in SAO, Ayanami was 147 centimeters and weighed 41 kilograms but she had grown to 156 cm and gained 3.5 kilograms after two years of being trapped in SAO; similarly, Ayanami's three sizes before starting SAO were 62/49/64 (in centimeters) but she had grown to 83.5/61/82 (although this change is not reflected in-game).[3] During the events of the Fairy Rondo (I) Arc, Ayanami grew to 159 centimeters and weighed 46 kilograms with a new three sizes measurement of 87/63/85.[5] During the Project Rhealizatoin Arc, Ayanami grew to 168 centimeters and weighed 51 kilograms with a new three sizes measurement of 91/65/89.[6]

During the SAO Closed Beta, Ayanami made sure to make changes to her avatar so that she could disguise herself amongst the normal players. She skipped all of her real-life traits entirely, giving her avatar sea-green eyes and shoulder-length black hair. She also made herself six centimeters taller so she would look older than she actually was and changed her manner of speaking to sound older (this made for good vocal practice as by this time, Ayanami had already taken voice acting roles).[10]

Due to the fact that the official release of SAO erased all character customizations, Ayanami appeared as herself; for a good portion of the entire run of SAO, she is almost always seen wearing the red-and-white uniform of the «Knights of the Blood» guild, the strongest of the clearing guilds.[22][13] However, whenever off-duty, Ayanami preferred to wear something more casual, consisting of handcrafted blue jeans with a leather belt and a sleeveless shirt of varying colors (depending on the day) with a purple cardigan.[23]

Memories of Evil[]

A flashback during the events of Floor 75 details Shiranami's life directly before and slightly after the SAO incident started. Shiranami had just finished recording a collaborative work with Nijika Karatachi (Rain) who was debuting as an idol through this collaboration. The two of them congratulate each other and Itsuki Taniguchi, Shiranami's manager excitedly proclaims that he believes this song will claim the top spot of songs for a while before allowing the young lady to have a great time when they begin playing «Sword Art Online». After they eat a short lunch, the two girls enter Ayanami's hotel room, a suite in the lavish Keio Plaza Hotel, where they break out the «NerveLinker» and login together at the same time. They meet two male players, Kirito and Klein, and together, they start playing, training each other while testing out the mechanics of the game itself (especially in the case of Klein and Rain). After six hours, Kirito and Klein decided to log off when they discovered that they could not log out before being suddenly and forcefully teleported to the plaza where they were told that they would not be able to log out until they clear all 100 floors of the castle. Upon having their custom avatars sheared away, Shiranami (and to a much smaller extent, Rain) were swarmed by fans from the real world who squealed at their chance of meeting the idol in-game. Uncomfortable by the attention, Shiranami scrambled to follow Kirito when the former spotted the latter running away, Rain tagging along behind her. Through some heavy insisting, Kirito allowed the three of them to form a party with him.

In the present, a few weeks prior to the events of the 75th Floor, Shiranami, the third-in-command of the prestigious «Knights of the Blood» guild, is exploring the 74th Floor Labyrinth until she decides to enter a «Safe Area». However, she had unwittingly left behind her subordinates, Nautilus and Yuna which Nautilus takes offense at, reprimanding his superior for leaving them in the dust. Forcibly changing the conversatoin, Shiranami declares that she is hungry and they should stop for lunch with Yuna and Shiranami butting heads as they both brought food. However, before the fight could escalate, Shiranami spots Kirito and Asuna. Calling out to Kirito, Shiranami and Asuna suggest that both of their parties should share lunch together. Slightly irritated by this development, Nautilus butts heads with Kirito before Asuna and Yuna cool them both down by enticing them with food.

After they had filled their stomachs, they exited the safe zone where they immediately encountered a platoon of «Demonic Servants» led by a «Lizardman Lord». The combined party of five high-level players wipe out the monster brigade with ease and with nothing them holding them back, they continue exploring the Labyrinth. Upon encountering the boss room, Kirito proceeds to give a last-minute briefing to everyone present, urging the others to keep a hand on their «Teleport Crystals» in hand in case things go awry. Opening the door, the five-strong group of players behold the boss before immediately escaping back to the «Safe Area» to begin discourse on planning for a boss raid. Unfortunately, their conversation was cut short when Corvatz made his appearance with at least thirty members of the «Aincrad Liberation Force». He asked for directions to the boss room, and despite repeated warnings from Shiranami and co, he ignored them and led his exhausted men to the boss room. Deciding to overlook them, Kirito consulted with Shiranami and others, suggesting that they should hurry and set up a strategy meeting when they were cut off a second time by Klein and his guild, «Fuurinkazan». After another healthy discourse, Kirito and Shiranami's plans to exit the Labyrinth and report their findings were impeded again time when a scream originating from the boss room shattered the air. Worried, all five players alongside Klein and his gulid, made a mad dash to the boss room.

Upon arriving, they encountered a disaster: the «Aincrad Liberation Force» had been pushed back to the point that they arrived in time to see Corvatz being thrown at their feet before dying. In a panic, Kirito demands the remaining soldiers use their «Teleport Crystals» but they shakingly report that the crystals do not work. This revelation of an «Anti-Crystal Area» plus the fact that the boss was not letting up on his attacks on the disabled soldiers pushed Asuna to the breaking point. Unable to take it, she charged into the boss room, however, Shiranami attacked first, closing the distance between herself and the boss with «Vorpal Strike» before exploiting a small loophole she found in the system concerning Sword Skills. With that, she activated «Vertical Square», shanking the boss four times and giving Asuna enough time to follow up with «Shooting Star».

Shiranami's powerful support with her singing skills weren't enough and Kirito asked to have ten seconds be bought for him while he retreated and changed his skill set. Nodding at this, Shiranami took Kirito's place, charging forward and ripping through the boss's abdomen with «Savage Fulcrum», however, Shiranami failed to connect a second sword skill, trapping her in a post-motion delay. When she was about to die, Klein swooped in and saved her using «Renge», bisecting the boss's arm, before ordering Asuna to extract Shiranami. Shiranami watched in stock surprise as Kirito finished his preparations and switched places with Asuna. Parrying away the giant sword, he summoned a second blue sword then activated «Gale Slicer», blowing the boss backward; Kirito then began a relentless attack on the boss upon unleashing «Starburst Stream». With his final strike, the boss disintegrated and the 74th Floor was successfully cleared. However, Kirito lost consciousness from overexertion.

Following the boss battle, Shiranami and Asuna tried nursing the unconscious Kirito but the system prevents them from doing much when he is not conscious. Shiranami's alternate personality breaks through to try and force Kirito awake; this was successful and Kirito awoke. At that moment, Yuu, a member of the «Bro Squad» guild and one the «Clearers», arrived at the boss room with several members of the KoB who he had encountered and followed to the boss room. He and Shiranami conversed with each other with Yuu, having surveyed the damage, being of mixed emotions due to the fact that there were casualties. After her conversation with Yuu, Shiranami lost consciousness. The following day, Kirito accidentally walks in on Shiranami changing after mistaking the door to her room as the bathroom door. Once she had sorted the issue out, Shiranami begins to cook breakfast while waiting for the others to rouse from their slumber. She converses with Kirito to inform him of the events that he had sat out of the previous day where Asuna and Shiranami went together to report their victory to the guildmaster.

Asuna and Shiranami both leave the former's house in «Selmburg» on the 61st Floor to visit «Granzam» on the 55th Floor where they inform Heathcliff about their victory and he requests that he see Kirito the following day. After their report, they return back to the Teleport Gate Plaza where they encounter a female player being harassed by a male player; the conflict descends into a First Strike duel where the female player, revealed to be Stravellia, the founder and leader of the «Amaryllis» guild, was victorious. In fear, Stetzer's groupies fawn over Shiranami which irritated her. Shiranami unleashed a non-system version of «Sharp Nail» in order to slap away the grown men clinging to her after which, the players ran away. She and Asuna bid goodbye to Stravellia and return to Selmburg.

Back in the present, the five players, Yuna, Nautilus, Kirito, Asuna, and Shiranami, hold a breakfast discussion where Kirito fully explains the workings of his ability which he displayed in the boss battle. Asuna also reveals the reason why she and Kirito were late to the Labyrinth exploration the previous day before Shiranami informs Kirito that Heathcliff had sent for him; in response, Kirito tries respectully declining, revealing the reason behind his fear of guilds. However, despite this, Kirito wanted to try again as he also very eager to meet Heathcliff. With Shiranami and Asuna as his escort, Kirito meets with Heathcliff who asks Kirito to join the «Knights of the Blood»; Kirito refuses and begins negotiating for how he would enter, saying that he wants to stake his entry with a duel against Heathcliff. However, before Heathcliff could accept, Shiranami asked the guildmaster if it was alright for her to subsitute for him and he allowed her to. With the details of their duel set in stone, the players return to Asuna's house to rest for another day as charged by Heathcliff due to their feat of practically soloing the 74th Floor.

Later that night, Shiranami and Kirito have a heart-to-heart conversation in which Kirito slips up and accidentally calls Shiranami his younger sister. Bemused by this, Shiranami proceeded to insist that she be allowed to address Kirito as her older brother and Kirito had no choice but to comply. The following morning, the duel took place two hours before noon in the city of Collinia on the 75th Floor. Surprised by the number of people who had come to spectate, Kirito sneered at Shiranami, telling her that she was enjoying the attention which Shiranami denied. The two fighters prepared themselves and after a very close battle, Shiranami was victorious. As he had lost, the terms set before the duel took effect and Kirito joined the «Knights of the Blood».

The Rose, the Lily, and Morning Dew[]

Two days later, Kirito's guild uniform as the newest member of the KoB uniform was complete. After measuring Kirito and making the necessary adjustments, Kirito sported the new uniform and Asuna informs Kirito that he needs to meet with the commander to set up an orientation run. Shiranami parted ways from Kirito and Asuna and went to visit Lisbeth to have «Breakwind» and «Arcturus» enhanced as she had gotten enough materials from the drops as a participant in the boss battle on the 74th Floor.
